In a move that many trainers feared was an April Fools’ prank, Niantic has officially released Mimikyu in Pokémon GO. After years of being the most requested “missing” Pokémon every Halloween, the Ghost/Fairy-type Alolan favorite has arrived as part of the “A Shockingly Good Time” event.
How to Catch Mimikyu
Unlike typical debuts, Mimikyu is playing hard to get. It is appearing in the wild, but trainers are reporting it as a “Very Rare” spawn. To secure your encounter, look for these specific methods:
- Wild Encounters: Mimikyu silhouettes are appearing on the “Nearby” radar, though they are infrequent.
- Spotlight Hour: On Wednesday, April 1, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM local time, Mimikyu will see increased spawns alongside Pikachu.
- Field Research: Special event-themed tasks like “Catch 10 Electric-type Pokémon” are rewarding Mimikyu encounters.
- GO Pass: Trainers who purchase the GO Pass: A Shockingly Good Time can unlock a guaranteed Mimikyu at Rank 30.
The “Disguise” Battle Mechanic
Mimikyu isn’t just a collectible; it brings its signature Disguise Ability to Pokémon GO.
How it works: In Trainer Battles (PvP) and Raids, Mimikyu can “tank” the first Charged Attack it receives without taking damage. Once the disguise is “Busted,” Mimikyu’s Defense stat is lowered for the remainder of the match.
Is Shiny Mimikyu Available?
Currently, Shiny Mimikyu is not available in Pokémon GO. Niantic typically saves the Shiny release for a major future event, likely the Halloween 2026 celebration. For now, trainers will have to settle for the standard (but still adorable) tattered rag version.
